Hotmail Outlook Express Discontinued

Microsoft has decided to discontinue offering Hotmail account access to its email users through Outlook Express. Outlook Express shipped bundled with several versions of Windows, including Windows XP; Outlook Express enabled you to check regular email accounts as well as your Hotmail account.

Windows Mail, Windows Vista's email program Windows Vista ships with "Windows Mail", an upgrade to Outlook Express in many respects; Windows Mail cannot be used to check Hotmail email accounts. From the start, Windows Vista users have used the "Windows Live Mail" email program to check their Hotmail accounts; Windows Mail ships with Windows Vista, Windows Live Mail is available as a free download for both Windows XP and Windows Vista users.

Hotmail Leaves Outlook Express

Many Hotmail users around the world received the email pictured below from the Windows Live Team: you will no longer be able to check your Hotmail from Outlook Express in June 2008. You will still be able to check your emails from Windows Live Mail.

Hotmail no longer available in Outlook Express

Hotmail users on Windows XP will easily be able to transfer their Hotmail account settings and Hotmail emails from Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail. Windows Vista users have already had to check their Hotmail emails from Windows Live Mail, since Windows Mail (the email client that comes with Vista) never did support Hotmail accounts.

This change can be hassle for some, but is a good long term decision by the Windows Live team. As we'll cover in our Windows Live Mail tutorial, migrating from Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail is actually very simple: all your account settings, emails, and contacts will be imported with just a few clicks.
